HAPPY HOLIDAY!

LAURIE RAPPEPORT
(ISRAEL)

   IRENE SENDLER

This year marked the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. The entire world stopped for a moment to commemorate the brave people who stood up to the Nazi juggernaut and fought in the name of freedom.
One of the unique aspects of the Warsaw ghetto upri-sing involved the non-Jews who joined the doomed revolt. Although it was clear that the revolt had no chance of succeeding, many Poles entered the ghetto from their safe homes in Warsaw and from the surrounding areas to join with the Jews in their struggle for survival. Other Polish Righteous Gentiles took in refugees from the ghetto and helped them live out the war in hiding.
There are many stories of these Righteous Gentiles but none is as incredible as that of Irena Sendler, a young Polish social worker who saved over 2500  Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto.
Sendler was one of the first members of the Zagota underground which was formed in 1940 to assist the Jews who were being persecuted by the German occupation. When the Warsaw ghetto was established she obtained documents that identified her as a nurse and allowed her to enter the ghetto as an "expert in infectious diseases." During her visits to the ghetto she brought in food and medicines but this aid was a drop in the bucket, given the massive disease and starvation that was occurring in the ghetto.
Sendler determined that the best course of action would be to remove people from the ghetto and she decided to concentrate on smuggling out children who were easier to remove and easier to hide among the larger Polish popula-tion. She began bringing out street orphans, sedating them and hiding them in tool boxes, bags and even in carts un-der garbage and snarling dogs to distract the German guards.
Over time Sendler started to approach families in the ghetto to convince them to allow her to remove their chil-dren. These scenes were heartwrenching, both to the pa-rents, who had to decide whether to allow strangers to take responsibility for their children's safety, and for Sendler herself. 50 years later Sendler described these scenes. “I talked the mothers out of their children" Sendler said."Those scenes over whether to give a child away were heart-rending. Sometimes, they wouldn’t give me the child. Their first question was, ‘What guarantee is there that the child will live?’ I said, ‘None. I don’t even know if I will get out of the ghetto alive today.”
While younger children were smuggled out in bags and under tram seats, older children were guided out through underground passageways and hidden breaks in the ghetto walls. Once on the other side of the ghetto Zagota identi-fied safe hiding places for the children, often in convents and orphanages as well as with sympathetic Polish fami-lies. Sendler marked the children's names and hiding places on pieces of tissue paper which she hid in glass jars and buried in her neighbor's garden. She hoped that the chil-dren could be reunited with their families after the war or, if not, at least with the Jewish community.
In 1943 Sendler was arrested and brought to the noto-rious Piawiak prison where the Nazis tortured her. Sendler did not, however, reveal any information about the chil-dren's whereabouts or about her Zagota comrades. The Germans scheduled her for execution but Zagota was able to bribe a German guard and they smuggled her out of the prison. Sendler
lived out the remainder of the war in hiding.
Sendler was honored as a Righteous Gentile in 1965 by Yad VaShem but her story was almost buried until a group of non-Jewish Kansas schoolgirls heard a rumor about her activities during the war. As part of a school project they decided to research the events surrounding her story and in 2003 they actually met and interviewed the then 93-year-old Irena Sendler

The girls' school assignment evolved into a nationally-acclaimed project called. Life in a Jar It comprises a book, a website and a performance which has been viewed by thousands of people and continues to inspire people from around the world.

IRENE SENDLER
Sendler a trăit ascunsă tot restul războiului.

ITALIAN HORIZONS: MARIA GRAZIA DI BIAGIO

INCANTESIMO
Mi tenevi sulla punta delle dita
con le tabelline la filastrocca
lo zucchero filato il desiderio
e sulla congiunzione delle labbra
dove l'angelo affondò il suo indice
premevo il mio per indurre al silenzio
lo spettro ubiquo della verità
ma Circe sa e lo sa la bambina che
l'incantesimo si fa e poi si scioglie.

Youwere holding me on yourfingertips
as a multiplicationtable, a nonsense
rhyme, sweetmeat, desire
and on the junction of lips

I was pressing mine to lead to silence
the ubiquitousghost of truth
but Circe knows
and the little girl knows, too,

CONTEMPORARY HORIZONS: EZRA DE HAAN (THE NETHERLANDS)

ODE TO A SECOND, DEAD OWL
Once more feathers fluttering
in the bend, near the lake
where three men drowned
flat on the road lies a dead owl.
At the water’s edge the peak keeps silent
along with the fisher in the boat.
Only the owl beckons.
Spreading a wing
At each car that passes.

ODĂ CELEI DE-A DOUA BUFNIŢE MOARTE
Încă o dată penele fluturând
în curbă, lângă lacul
unde s-au înecat trei oameni,
strivită pe şosea zace o bufniţă moartă.
La marginea apei piscul rămâne tăcut
la fel ca pescarul din barcă.
Doar bufniţa semnalizează.
Arătând cu aripa
Spre fiecare maşină care trece.

repeated beginning,

bottom stone which always comes above.

INTERCULTURAL HORIZONS: DANIEL DRAGOMIRESCU

ORFISM, EXISTENTIALISM AND POETIC CONFESSION
From a declared and asserted aesthetic perspective of the symbolism represented by Paul Verlaine (1844-1896), the author of the well-known slogan “Music beyond every-thing...”, the poetry seems to be a nearly perfect synonym for music. Indeed, poetry is music, but, at the same time, it also represents a confession, a “memoir” of a life and of an age.
The poetic work of Claudio Sottocornoala covers an ample thematic area and carries forth a notable stylistic variety of an author with literary, musical and cultural affinities altogether. He is an authentic homo universalis of our time, and simultaneously a man who belongs to his contemporary society, adding up to it his very specific worlds and shadows, virtues and contradictions. The book entitled Giovinezza... adio!/ Good bye, youth!, divided in two chronological and thematic sections (Primi sguardi, Ricerche, Giorni bianchi, Preghiera, Città e musica, Ac-querelli, Cartoon, Moralità, Pensiero debole) appears to be a summa poetica in which the author tries to offer to his readers (be they scarce or many, of our day) a complete experience of life and thought embedded in a literary and artistic work . Thus a legit question arises: what are the guidelines of this fragmented and sinuous landscape? The answer lays in the content of the work itself, as it does in any artistic relevant and valuable work of art.
At the first reading, Good bye, youth! is─as the title itself suggests, a melancholic memorial of the past ( more or less distant) of a variety of experiences  (“primi sguar-di”) and of their poetic rendition, through means inspired by a fully delicate and emotional impressionism. The abili-ty to translate life into poetry, which makes the author to pass for Midas or, if anything, for a Marco Polo of writing verses, draws our attention from the first reading, as Sergio Endrigo does in the well-known drama entitled Noah’s Ark: “I velieri solcavano / arcani i mari/ approdando alle/ orientali terre/ ove rosee moschee/ marmoree erano,/ e tappeti volanti...”* (Sogno, p. 49). One may note a subtle melodic line in this aesthetic form, based on the vowels’s disposal (rosee – mosque - marble).  Reverence (p.141) is a text that wholly displays its musical qualities,  thanks to its repetitions or refrains: “I loved you/ I loved you/ as a seaweed does/ I loved you/ and I’ve been lost (...)”. The nostalgic remains of his childhood and the somehow retro perspective provoked by the present time are interwoven in the poem The ‘60s, thus rendering the poetic palimpsest of a decade that absorbed the American experience in a variety of ways, alongside with its transient simbols: “the American kid”, the ye-ye music, the invasion of UFO’s and so on – in essence, a concise evocation, but suggestive for that time by its symbols (be they mental, social or cul-tural): “The ‘60s would take the train/ the American kid/ with turned up nose/ the night would come down mytho-logically/ among the stars on the sky/ ...and ye-ye songs.../ encyclopedia of knowledge/ was teaching Geography and History...” (p.209). Closer to our day, in the penultimate section (Cartoon), the reader is given the chance of meet-ing the postmodern musical world and its beloved sym-bols: “ This world that come and dance/ white socks in certain steps/.../ in a seagull’s flight (Jackson/ as if a Prince of Lilies),/ thin-cut red lips/ a multiplication of light/ in the American night in Milano...” (Jackson live, p.277).
Beyond orfism and of  “decadent” inspired musicality (term coined by Verlaine ) or simply through the poetic-musical joint of these elements, another level of the work of Claudio Sottocornola, equally important, belongs to the existentialism, the one inspired form metaphysics, with affiliations with the phylosophy of Gabriel Marcel, which can also be found in the literary work of Albert Camus. This dimension will not surprise us, as the author himself is a philosopher (he was a Philosophy and History teacher in many Italian lyceums). To that effect, the reflection that precedes the second section of the book (Ricerche) defines itself as an existentialist confession that cannot escape observation: “... I wanted my life to have a sense in its events and in its essence...” (p.69). This existentialist/ existential feeling threads like a red line the entire poem, giving it a consistent configuration of the author’s poetic craft. A habitual repeated happening in the ordinary life grows into introspection, reduced to its essential notes, like an aphorism, as one may notice by reading this poem,: “ To wake up/ in a certain morning/ young/ wet/ as if it were/ your first day here/.../ My God, I live./ I am/ a mo-saic of light” (To wake up, p.83). This is a perfect example of an existentialist poem, laden with the symbolist aesthet-ic of the same old Verlaine, who had declared himself an enemy of rhetrorics! The section entitled Preghiera, which starts with an interrogative epigraph  (“ What is the use of poetry?”), is grouped in short prose-poems, where the Christian inspiration brings the author in the world of the sacred and inspires him to write verses characterised by biblical sensibility (Oh, saint and beautiful cross, p.185, Jesus, I feel tired and weak, p.187), authentic anthems and confessions of the soul.
Yet the most interesting and representative aspect of the poetic universe of Claudio Sottocornola resides in his aesthetic openness to the modern and avant-garde direc-tions in the XXth century. The author instates various themes and motives which defined an entire literary age through avant-garde, especially through constructivism, that also prevailed in Bucharest (in the ‘20s and ‘30s). The atmosphere of the city with all its distinct signs, belonging to our daily and postmodern life integrated in the “global village”- the glass cases, the automobile, the pub, the as-phalt and the street, the bus, the honk, the light spots, the IBM, the Adidas brand and so on – are used to generate poetry: “Oh, the city is so beautiful/ from behind the glass case of a pub/ like a pyramid of flights/ of honks and automobiles on the asphalt/ and lights in the sky/ and music vibrating in one’s ears (...)” (Oh, the city is so beautiful, p. 195-196).
“Claudio is not a hasty artist (...), he conveys an interior world related to creation and philosophycal speculation”, says Donato Zoppo in his endnote of the volume Good bye, youth!. We may add that he is much more than that.

ORFISMO, ESISTENZIALISMO E CONFESSIONE POETICA
(Claudio Sottocornola, Giovinezza... adio!, Bergamo, 2008)

GANG OF 7: EMILY VOGEL (UNITED STATES)

 A SMALL REPORT
 Jesus was crucified yesterday afternoon,
 or Jesus was crucified
two thousand years ago. The days pass

in the usual sense of days passing:

we eat pork roast and potatoes,
watch clever commercials on the television.

The nature of time is terrifically troubling.

A six-foot Santa rises among some evergreen trees,
among the muck of a dimly lit back road,
among the cold and forthcoming season.

You fall asleep on the floor beneath my feet.
Somewhere is the sound of water.
My womb swells with the bulk of a life.
Stories unfold in a series of images,
people pass in and out as personalities
bereft of names.

At the falling of dusk, Emmanuel comes,
and the traffic on the highway proceeds

in a wild confusion of light.
SCURTĂ MĂRTURIE
Iisus a fost răstignit ieri după-amiază,
sau Iisus a fost răstignit
acum două mii de ani. Zilele trec

trece printre gunoaiele unei străzi dosnice slab luminate,
