ORIZONTUL PROZEI: ROXANA DONCU (ROMANIA)

Camera obscura

Gândurile i se risipesc, asemenea pescărușilor.

Every city has its secret, and ours is no exception. When one takes a walk along the future promenade, the specters of its leisurely passers-by and frantic joggers bump into each other, fighting for the inexistent space they will mark as conquered territory. The squirrels are multiplying, already dreaming of the rich captures of peanuts and popcorn, and the crows furtively eye each other, trying to calculate the exact number of neighbours the maple tree will accommodate. There are three hundred branches divided between one hundred inhabitants, this makes roughly three. At the end of winter, after the seeping frost, there will be only two, or maybe one and a half.

Reflection is not only the property of water, the man says to himself as he stumbles across a root carefully hidden by the rotten foliage. He stops to clean his befogged glasses. Water can mirror faithfully and conceal beautifully, it is the consummate artist. What does one see when one looks at the world? He has been trying to figure out the secret of the city for too long, now his mind is running in circles, drawing models of itself, and dust has settled on his inner eye. The glasses sparkle and catch the vanishing daylight in a rainbow: itself a property of water and light, a child of the gods.

Distance makes the silvery sky-scrapers throw lengthening shadows on the lake. A fisherman is talking to the half-frozen fish, trying to convert them into food; some fall for the bait, others swim on. I am not so different from this fisherman, I throw my net, too, but thoughts are much more slippery, and they leave behind a trail of thin ice: many have slipped and broken their necks. The gulls cry derisively at the fishing rod: this snake does not move at all, how does it want to get the fish? They take off, hover for a second, then dive straight for the prey. It’s a pity one doesn’t have wings…

But at the other end of the rainbow there is always a treasure, the man suddenly remembers. Carefully hidden and guarded by potato-faced trolls. He is sitting in the exact spot, dusk is pouring buckets of gold over his graying hair. He faces the construction site as another Paul in the burning desert, overwhelmed by revelation. Almost blind, his gaze rolls over the mountains of sand, the upturned mud with its cache of shells and snails, the arched back of the fisherman, the flurry of birds, towards an unidentified point on the horizon. It is almost as if he had seen the Angel of the Future and its twin sister, Inspiration.

Every city has its secret: some keep it hidden in the dark vaults of their past, securely padlocked, others flaunt it in the face of their visitors and besiegers, locked in a strange code, a foreign alphabet or an undecipherable handwriting. It takes courage to break into the secrets of the first kind, and perseverance, or sheer luck, to discover the second. The reflection and its object: the changing design on the lake blurs the perpetual life in its depths. Written in invisible ink, the life at the bottom of the lake reveals only its skeleton, and this only by some kind of violation. But death has no secrets to reveal.

Every day he goes out for a walk along the construction site on the lake, taking in the subtle changes of the earth and weather. The birds fly away when he approaches the promenade, and he is always startled by the sudden flush of wings. His thoughts are scattered, too, like the gulls. Sometimes, he meets other people, he remembers that couple of talkative teenagers, who were taking a selfie of themselves almost falling into the lake. Most of the people are silent, though, as if they were walking inside a museum, or as if the place was demanding a vow of silence. There is no more fertile soil for thought.

Reflection is not only the property of water, he thinks, but of the mind also. What does the mind reflect? He stopped to take off and clean his glasses, as usual. He had seen something sparkling among the flowing tresses of the water willows, a golden glow like the one from which, one day, long ago, the Angel of the Future was incarnated on the horizon. A camera flashed: he looked blindly into it, and then into the shadow that was blocking the sun. There is a moment when every disciple turns into a master: on the digital screen he had himself become a reflection, a strange alphabet disguising a secret.
