INTERNATIONAL HORIZONS

54 years after.
The Assassination of Kennedy
& conspiracy theories
by Daniel Dragomirescu

A lot has been written and said so far, both in the US and the rest of the world about the assassination of J.F. Kennedy in Dallas, an historical event which took place 54 years ago. In Romania as well the topic has been widely debated. The book “The Death of a President” by William Manchester (published in 1964, only a short time after the American edition) enjoyed great popularity in Romania. Another famous translation was that of the book “Rush to Judgment” (1968) by Mark Lane, which proposed a quite personal interpretation of the events that occurred in Dallas in the autumn of 1963. Although through its authority (with which it had been invested by Lyndon B. Johnson, Kennedy’s successor to presidency) the Warren Commission accredited and forcefully imposed the thesis of the assassin that acted by himself (the sociopath Lee Harvey Oswald), a great part of the public, according to the successive polls, doubted the truthfulness of the Warren Commission report, considering that there was no openness towards it or that at least part of it had to be hidden.

Yet behind all the conspiracy theories there are the facts.

Let us succinctly remember some of them. After his speedy arrest by the Dallas police, which had already left the impression of a blatant lack of professionalism, Oswald claimed in front of the TV cameras that he was a “patsy” (a scapegoat). If it were he who killed Kennedy, as the official history has written down so far, why was he assassinated before he appeared in front of the court? The reasons that Jack Ruby, a member of the Chicago mafia gave for killing Oswald were wearing thin and did not convince anybody. Then, like now, Oswald was just the presumptive, not the proved, assassin of the president Kennedy.

Whoever watches Abraham Zapruder’s movie can see clearly how a bullet strikes the president in the back, and shortly after that, how he is hit directly in the face by a bullet from a gun of great force and caliber, which could have killed a dinosaur.

And here’s how one could reason according to the facts. If Oswald, located at the sixth floor of the Texas Book Depository, shot Kennedy in the back from a window situated on the right side of the front of that building, then it would have been physically impossible to shoot him in the face from the same place, after only a few seconds. The trajectory of the lethal bullet was perfectly perpendicular on the axis of the road on which the presidential limousine was driven and any ballistic expert can confirm that it was not likely that the lethal bullet would follow that route if it had come from the Deposit, even admitting that in just a few seconds Oswald could have run to the window on the opposite side (the left) of the Deposit and could have placed himself in a good shooting position, in order to finish off the American president. The lethal bullet, the one that blew the president’s brain, was shot from a place other than the Deposit of school books: either from the level passage towards which the presidential party was heading (about which nobody says anything anymore), from the grassy hill (a long discussed theory) or from another side. It is obvious that Kennedy’s assassination was the work of an elite shooter, which Oswald does not seem to have been, however much he liked to take pictures of himself with a Mannlicher Carcano carbine in hand, as it had been already proved by his failure to assassinate Texan General Walker not long before.

Clint Hill, the secret agent that climbed in the still running presidential car immediately after the attack in order to protect the Kennedy couple, said that between the two or three shots there was another  gunfire which threw projectiles among the official party. And John Connaly, the governor of Texas, without denying the conclusions of the Warren Commission, declared that he held he opinion that he was not wounded by any of the buletts that hit Kennedy.

What happened on the 22 November 1963 in Dallas looks more like a public execution. An ambush where nobody was going to survive was professionally organized in Dealey Plaza. And the fact that he was so violently assassinated, in front of all the people and his Texan supporters, suggests that president Kennedy had to be stopped from winning the second presidential mandate at any costs. Why and by whom remains to be discovered, perhaps, by the historians, in the times of our great-grandchildren.

The rest is indeed a theory of conspiracy or rather a multitude of theories of conspiracy, which scholarly or sensationally combine pieces of truth with a lot of mystifications difficult to see as such, so that the American and the international public can understand anything but the whole truth in relation to Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas over half a century ago.
