NEW IN BIBLIOTHECA UNIVERSALIS: MORELLE SMITH (UNITED KINGDOM)

Vienna – Hana's Story

When I first enter Hana's apartment in Vienna, the crowded walls rush and tumble in my direction. It is like entering a cave, studded with barnacles and shells. The furniture is hemmed in by clamouring walls, pulsing in all varieties of shades of blue.

The porcelain plates, saucers, dishes, bulge, curl outwards from the walls. The impression is of entering a den, whether gem or shell-studded, it adds an extra layer of protection, an armoury of faïence, strings of beaded patterned defences.

There are photographs as well – Hana's father, mother, uncle. On all sides, she is surrounded by echoes of the past and the slow accumulation of trophies she has won, has wrested from her life here. The table against the wall is almost covered with more teapots and dishes, curved and patterned containers, lightly painted with traces of pink, blue and gold. Other dishes contain wrapped chocolates – Mozart chocolates, Hana laughs as she offers me one. The tinsel wrappings are red and gold. Even the tray which Hana brings through from the kitchen, with the china teapot and cups, that too, is porcelain.

It is difficult to move, among all these objects – so territorial, so firmly planted in their space. Their delicacy exerts tyranny, for one thoughtless gesture could sweep several of these patterned despots from a table or wall, send them crashing into anonymity, possibly unleashing a smoky, vengeful afterlife.

The spacious high-ceilinged living-room feels cramped and tiny. It is Vienna's fixation with the ornate and the baroque that has insinuated itself into her apartment. Its curls, decorations and flourishes have overgrown, climbed the walls like ivy and poured into her living-room.

Hana and her parents left Albania just after WWII, when she was eight years old. She spent the rest of her childhood in Italy and came to work in Vienna as a young adult. Sixty years would pass before she returned to Albania.

We were like the Jews of Albania, Hana said, we had to leave, but we were never asked to come back. (...)
