HEADING NORTH

When I was young, thumbing lifts
through France and Spain
I thought, this is where I want to be,
living my life in southern lands:
the south – there is my destiny.

Afterwards I stood
by the roadside of my life
thumbing down the years,
but none would stop for me until –
it must have been a day
I don’t recall, on a road
that has left no trace
in the snowdrift of my memory –

an offer, I suppose, unrefusable,
happening once: a truck
that squealed to a stop,
a door that opened, a voice
that growled: Hop in,
you’re heading north.

And by the dashboard light I saw
the driver’s face, saw that it was mine,

and I echoed ‘heading north’.
And north it was
and north I went
and here I am.

SPRE NORD

Când eram tânăr, făcând autostopul
prin Franţa şi Spania,
ȋmi spuneam că sunt ȋn locul potrivit,
trăindu-mi viaţa ȋn ţinuturile sudice:
sudul – acolo-mi era menirea.

Mai târziu, am stat
la marginea de drum al vieţii mele
ȋncercând să opresc anii,
dar timpul nu a poposit până când –
trebuie să fi fost o zi
de care am uitat, petrecută pe un drum
care nu a brăzdat
troianul de zăpadă al memoriei mele –

o ofertă, de nerefuzat, bănuiesc,
s-a ivit: un camion
a scârţâit la stop,
o portieră s-a deschis, o voce
răguşită: Urcă,
mergi spre nord.

Lumina bordului mi-a dezvăluit
faţa şoferului, era a mea,

şi am repetat, ca un ecou, „mă-ndrept spre nord”.
Şi nord a fost.
Spre nord am mers.
Şi iată-mă ajuns.

CULTURAL PROFILE

     Donald Adamson is a widely-published Scottish poet and translator, currently living in Finland. He co-founded the arts magazine Markings, and has been a prize winner in several poetry competitions. His poem ‘False Prophets’, which in 1999 won the Herald Millennium Poetry Competition, is buried in a time capsule under the walls of the Scottish Poetry Library. He is currently translating the poems of the Finnish Nobel-prize candidate Eeva Kilpi.

     Donald Adamson este un poet și traducător scoțian, publicat extensiv, ce locuiește în momentul de față în Finlanda. A fost unul dintre cei care au înființat revista de artă „Markings” (Semne distinctive) și a fost printre câștigătorii a câtorva concursuri de poezie. Poezia sa, „Profeți falși”, care în 1999 a câștigat concursul de poezie Herald Millennium, este îngropată într-o capsulă a timpului sub zidurile Scottish Poetry Library (Biblioteca Poeziei Scoțiene). În prezent, Adamson traduce poeziile câștigătoarei premiului Nobel, finlandeza Eeva Kilpi.
