Mike Bannister, former Chair and President of the Suffolk Poetry Society, serves as Chair and Convenor of Pinky’s Poetry Café. Mike won the Crabbe Memorial Poetry Competition in 2009.  The Green Man / Omul Verde is the twelfth volume in the international Bibliotheca Universalis series from Romania. Each poem in this compact book is followed by a Romanian translation. The fine cover illustration, executed by Amber Pletts, the poet’s granddaughter, is the perfect complement to the title poem (p.43). This piece, ‘The Green Man’, sets the tone for the collection as it redefines past mythologies. ‘Gawain Country’ and its legends are brought to life as Mike enchants his readers with these Tolkienesque lines:

‘Star fire, a ring of nine stones none of us
could lift, a small mountain of embers, flickering...’

The poet has an eye for detail and an ear attuned to ‘silence for the ghost of silence’ (‘Satin Moth’). Subject matter ranges from the tranquil beauty of a deer encounter in France (‘The Deer Pool’) to a Dickensian sense of unease (‘Caged Birds for Sale’) in a Bradford mill-yard in winter.  Mike’s poems sparkle with multi-layered meanings, and every so often this reader was stopped in her tracks by the quiver of ‘bright shadows’ piercing the surface.
Mike is a master-craftsman, who draws a wealth of poetic tools – alliteration, rhyme, allusion – from his kitbag. ‘A jostle of traders’ (‘Venice – a masque in Autumn’) is one of many arresting images evoked by the poet’s sleight of hand. The collection presents a paradoxical mix of the ethereal and the concrete. There are times when ‘shy smiles’ (‘After this Peace’) and ‘weeds like mermaid’s hair’ (‘My Friend Sapphire’) give way, albeit briefly, to the weighty realities of  ‘the factory gate’ (‘Bus Rides with Faulkner’) and ‘the cell of flint’ (‘The Second Scrivener’).
Society members will recognise Mike’s poem title of ‘The Singing Stone’ (p.33) from our Diamond Jubilee anthology. Pauline Stainer, the editor, noted that ‘when the stone sings, landscapes become, indelibly, those of the heart.’ Mike’s poems assuredly ‘defend the lexicon’ (‘Walpole Old Chapel, Suffolk’) as they boomerang smoothly through realms of time and space, before returning to their heartland, only to alight with added lustre. This reviewer is particularly drawn to the poem, ‘On Candle Dyke’, in which a familiar Broadland landscape glows like ‘Atlantis under stars’.

Note: It is Mike’s hope that this book may help to strengthen the ‘bonds of friendship between … Romania and the United Kingdom.’ This review first appeared in Twelve Rivers (Spring 2015, ed. Cameron Hawke Smith), the newsletter of the Suffolk Poetry Society in the UK.
