INTERCULTURAL HORIZONS: MORELLE SMITH (UNITED KINGDOM)

     BRAMA PARK AND MATEJKI, POLAND
Sunshine. This sunny day wears a blue sky that’s dressed for staying, shrugged off its cloud courtiers with their dazzle of dark livery, pleated and pressed, layered with deepening colour to a purple so dark it’s almost black, with a sheen of slate blue over it. No bobbing plumes of curved cloud fanning out, no cut-out curves of white, arranged on a formal table, where decisions of  state are made, discreetly, gateaux served with port, on tiered cakestands in baroque buildings in the capital of empires.
A light edge to the sunlight and the air that surrounds us, trees’ breath, lightly scented, a mixture of rose petals and some unruly red flower by the fountain where the gardeners dig up the earth and I catch this edge, like mois-ture on my tongue...
This faint outline tastes of red – red flowers yes, but the ripening of berries, shift in colour and in palate, in shade of colour, shade of trees, that creeps out a little further on the path.
Yesterday at Kicin and Czerwonak, walking in woods and then suddenly the path opens up and there are fields on either side and the field of rye, so sparsely sown. It undulates just a little, and there are tiny blue flowers growing in between the stalks. A prim cap of cloud on the horizon.
