FOLLOWING THE COURSE OF EVENTS. PE FIRUL EVENIMENTELOR

In the name of God
by Daniel Dragomirescu

These days in Paris people die on the streets. I have no idea what the great playwright Eugen Ionescu would have thought about this “Jeu du massacre”, had he still been alive.
Many crimes and genocides that have marked the course of history have been committed in the name of God, be it Allah, Jehovah or some other. In the XVIIth century the German principalities were shaken by the Thirty Years War between the Catholics and the Protestants, which cost thousands of human lives. A little while before, in France, in Paris as well as other cities, all the Huguenots (Protestant Christians), from high dignitaries to the lowest boot-maker or tailor, were slaughtered by the Catholics on the night of 23-24 August 1572. This bloody episode, known in history under the name of the Night of Saint Bartholomew, has endured in our collective memory as a classic example of intolerance pushed to the extremes of human cruelty and abjection. In South Africa, the Zulu tribes have continued the practice of sacrificing their children and their young in the name of their god, who asked for lives and human blood, well into the XXth century. In a similar way, the glorious indigenous people of pre-Columbian Mexico used to sacrifice people during vast ritual ceremonies: the Great Priest, armed with a sharpened knife, killed his victims and pulled out their bleeding hearts out of their chests, in front of a numerous audience. In ancient Carthage a vast cemetery was discovered, full of children’s skeletons (sacrificed in the name of the god Moloch, of Phoenician origin). And examples are countless, unfortunately. You can disregard them if you want.
At present an uncertain number of fanatical Islamists have come here in Europe as “refugees”, in order to transform the lives of citizens in terror, blood and death. From one year to the next, political correctness not only proves its inefficiency, but threatens to turn into a dictatorial and downright criminal ideology.
To be clear, the religious feeling of people is natural and should be respected. But if a religious follower is guided on the path of peace and universal brotherhood or, on the contrary, he is transformed into an armed killer is another problem, and this is indisputably an aspect that relates to the institutionalization of the religious phenomenon.

ROMANIAN HORIZONS - EUROPEAN HORIZONS, HORIZONTES RUMANOS - HORIZONTES EUROPEOS

  Democracy and Responsibility

The masses of solidary citizens that were participating in a commemorative march for the victims in the Colectiv Club came back last night on the streets of the capital in triple numbers. They marched in front of the most important political institutions, starting with the Parliament and ending with the Victoria Square Palace. They were not silent anymore, they tried to sketch a project for a better country, asking for and obtaining the downfall of some important leaders that were responsible for what does not work in Romania, starting with the Prime Minister, Victor Ponta, who was the hope of the young wing of the former USL.

One question that was asked was: if ‘they’ fall, do we have a better option? The slogan that came back and was shouted by the 30.000 demonstrants in Bucharest – “All parties – the same misery” – says it all: unfortunately, at the moment people have completely lost faith in the existing parties, both those in office and the ones in the opposition, a more or less ornamental one – a fact officially recognized by Ponta himself, who, not long ago, had the bad idea to pride himself on the fact that at present, in Romania, “there is no opposition”. This severe crisis of faith of the Romanians has been obvious for a while, yet no political party made a real attempt to heed the signals and improve its performance on the political scene.

The second question is a logical one, but which, in the tragic context of the events in the Colectiv Club sounds malicious, disrespectful and even provocative. I reproduce it here, quoting the comment of a reader on the site of a national magazine (“Revista 22”): “It’s ok to protest, but it’s better to pay attention to who you vote for! In a democracy you cannot blame anyone but yourself. Who elected Piedone  mayor? Who elected Oprescu? Who elected Ponta and Oprea through the uninominal voting system?” End of quote.

However, things are not as simple as they appear in this subtly partisan way of thinking. Democracy does not mean taking responsibility off parties and politicians and blaming simple citizens for their bad government. Similarly, during the June 1999 Mineriad, the responsibility for the brutalities did not fall on the real miners, but on those who manipulated them. The first to be held responsable in a democracy which is not an oligarchy are the parties, the members of the parliament and the Govern. If you want to rule a country, you have to take responibility for your deeds. You should not make too great demands on the trust and the understanding of the citizens whose legitimate expectations you belie, so that afterwards you can shift the guilt for what you did wrong or just not well enough on them. Only demagogues and their interested or naive allies can say: citizen, you are to blame because you voted for this opportunist or: citizen, you are to blame because you did not care to vote for an opportunist.

It is true that there is no democracy, in the modern sense of the word, without political pluralism. But is also equally true that democracy means the unconditional responsibility of those to whom people delegate power temporarily through their votes.

Democracia y responsabilidad

Quién puso a Piedone alcalde?

UNIVERSAL HORIZONS: OSCAR HAHN (CHILE)

aunque no pueda responderme

y ahora a veces tengo mucho miedo mamá
y usted esté a mi lado aunque no pueda verla

Morte di mia madre

Il Papa è morto
e tutte le televisioni del mondo
stanno mostrando la notizia
Adesso vediamo il trasferimento del corpo
attraverso le stanze del Vaticano
Io so che a te

In questi momenti

e adesso a volte ho molta paura mamma

My Mother Death

The Pope’s died
and every television set in the world
is giving the news
Now we see the body being moved
across the rooms of the Vatican
I know you
would have liked to see all that mama
and you would have been moved
and you would have followed the broadcast
from you bed

And the remains of the Pope
were carried from the chapel
to Saint Peter’s Cathedral
But you
we had to lower to the bulding’s basement
in a wheel chair
because the casket wouldn’t fit in the elevator

In these moments
the thousand million Catholics
there are in the world
express their grief for the Pope’s death
but the sum of all that grief
can’t compare
to the grief your children felt
when they carried you by wheel chair
and put you in your casket

The fact that I’m talking to you now
even though you can’t respond to me
tells me you aren’t dead
that you’re somewhere in the universe
listening to me
because existing can’t be something so poor
as living stuck inside a body
that turns into rabbish that turns into ashes

I remember when I was a child
and had nightmares about the devil
I run to get in your bed
and sometimes now mama I’m very afraid
and don’t want any more fear
I want the whole universe to be like a great bed
I can get into when I’m afraid
and you’re beside me though I can’t see you

Moartea mamei mele

Papa a murit

BIBLIOTHECA UNIVERSALIS: PETER THABIT JONES (UNITED KINGDOM)

Stars
(in memory of Terry Hetherington, Welsh poet)

Stars shine,
flowers of broken glass
on the mind’s black carpet.

The prayers of gods
solidified,
romantic notes

written by time’s
slow burning.
They snag

the deadened eyes
of the loneliest
of men.

The night’s burrs,
frosted codes
of the earth-palaced

kings of Egypt,
how they scratch
the stares of silence,

wound like fine dust
the emptied-out soul,
the universe of being.

Snow cobwebs
of shining thoughts,
brooding

with eternity,
unfinished elegy
on the page of the sky.

Stele
(în amintirea lui Terry Hetherington, poet galez)

Stelele strălucesc,
flori de sticlă spartă
pe covorul negru al gândurilor.

Rugăciunile către zeități
împietrite,
note romantice

scrise de arderea
blândă a timpului.
Se prind
în ochii umbriți
ai celor mai singuri
oameni.

Ciulinii nopții,
coduri înghețate
ale regilor Egiptului

cu palate din țărână,
cum zgârie ei
privirile fixe ale tăcerii,

cum rănesc ei prăfuind
sufletul pustiit,
universul ființei.

Fire de păianjen ca neaua
din gânduri sclipitoare
pun la cale

cu nemărginirea
o elegie neterminată
pe fila cerului.

Cultural Profile

Peter Thabit Jones is a Welsh writer, born in 1951, who has published mainly poetry, but also drama and prose, and has been teaching literature and creative writing at Swansea University for twenty-two years. His work has been awarded and translated into many languages and this is his fourth collection translated into Romanian.
The poet subtly suggests the art of poetry may be helpful in coming to grips with difficulties, failure, crisis, trauma, anything that usually overwhelms and petrifies the contemporary man. Choosing pain as the very source of your art, not so much trying to make sense of it, but to live on in its presence, no matter if inside or outside the self – that is the challenge.
Peter Thabit Jones is a honorary contributor of CLH from 2009.
