A NEW INTERCULTURAL PROJECT

BIBLIOTHECA UNIVERSALIS
by Daniel Dragomirescu

A couple of years ago, I concevied the idea of a book collection to reunite the verse and prose of the most important authors and collaborators of the Contemporary Literary Horizon, starting with the year 2009, when it converted to an intercultural magazine and started publishing authors from around the globe, in various mother tongues. But this project was shelved for various reasons, among which the fact that the magazine’s anthologies, starting in 2010, offered us the possibility to partially reunite some of the notable contributions within the covers of the same publication.
“Bibliotheca Universalis” proposes to spread out the literary endeavours of its collaborators and au-thors beyond the pages of OLC, in (only) 6 yearly issues, and beyond our anthologies, hoping to reunite all the worthy contributions for a whole year. Each book in this collection will be bilingual: in the author’s mother tongue and in Romanian, including 25-30 texts from every author’s creation. The texts are preceded by a critical introduction on the author and concluded with a grouping of critical references from their native press and a bio-bibliographical note on the author’s writings and literary-cultural activi-ties, so that the readers may acquire a clear and comprehensive view on the subject. One can appreciate this to be another means of diffusing and promoting contemporary literature, as it has been represented in OLC for a few years now. It is an initiative that is helping us to transgress the ephemeral that is fatally limiting publication activity, since by definition a book is more enduring.
This year’s collection predominantly reunites authors of poetry from various countries and continents, as the magazine has been doing for quite a long time. Decidedly, the “BU” number of books is not unli-mited, but depends on material conditions (there are approximately six months left to the year’s end to publish 15-20 different books and we dispose of a rather limited team of translators). At this moment, we are considering for the “Bibliotheca Universalis” authors from England (such as Katherine Gallagher of London, the true “godmother” of OLC, Mike Bannister, Paul Sutherland), from Scotland (Neil Leadbea-ter,  our great friend from Edinburgh, Martin Bates, Douglas Lipton), Italy (Calogero Restivo, Claudio Sottocornola, singer and poet), Holland (Ezra de Haan), the United States (John “Juanito” Tischer, this last Kerouac, completely anonymous, surviving between USA and Mexico and always apprehensive at the prospect of becoming famous). The Hispanics and Latinos are soundly represented in the “Bibliotheca” by Anna Rossell, our good friend from Barcelona, Luis Ángel Marín Ibáñez and Felix Martín Arencibia (Canaria), and we cannot overlook Luis Benitez from Argentina (Buenos Aires) or Martín Sosa Cameron (Córdoba); joining them is Niza Todaro of Montevideo, a faithful OLC collaborator, Andrés Morales from Santiago de Chile, and a few more that we would have liked to mention here. There is no doubt that among these authors there will be a few who will confirm or reassert their worth by new awards and well-earned approval.
And to conclude, a brief remark. The evolution of our interculturality follows a logical course. The OLC motto has been – and still is – “The entire globe in one magazine”. For this new intercultural endea-vour the corresponding motto could be: “The entire globe in one library.”

BIBLIOTHECA UNIVERSALIS

Evoluţia interculturalităţii noastre are un fir logic.
