BRITISH HORIZONS: CAROLINE GILL

DAYDREAMING AT CLOUDS HILL
‘they may act their dream with open eyes’
                                                        T. E.  Lawrence
Herodotus would say
‘Why worry?’ when the night
becomes the dawn of day,

and seven sheets of grey
waft in to cloud our sight.
Time-shifting sands will stray,

and desert eyes will know
that wisdom brings delight:
care calls on us to stay

like camels in the snow.
Those pillars soar in height
and line the sage’s way:

full moons will come and go.
‘Why worry?’ when the day
becomes the dead of night,
Herodotus would say.

First published in Voice & Verse.
The words, ‘Why worry?’, refer to a phrase in Greek attributed to Herodotus, which Lawrence of Arabia carved above the door at his Clouds Hill home.

A "FAUX" COWBOY AND A REAL POET: JON VARGA (UNITED STATES)

REVENGE
On windswept nights like these
old lovers dare to inflict
fresh wounds.
In the fury of unforgiving gusts
they hurl themselves
against my windows
shrieking in ice-bitten voices,
rattling the glass
until I'm wide awake.
Satisfied to see me shivering
in a cold and lonely bed,
they finally retreat
with howls of laughter
across the distant plains.

RĂZBUNARE
În nopţile bătute de vânt ca aceasta
vechi amanţi îndrăznesc să provoace
răni proaspete.
În furia rafalelor necruţătoare
se izbesc pe ei înşişi
de ferestrele mele
ţipând cu glasuri asurzitoare
zgâlţâind geamurile
până când mă trezesc.
Mulţumiţi să mă vadă tremurând
într-un pat rece şi pustiu,
se retrag în cele din urmă
cu sălbatice hohote de răs
de-a lungul îndepărtatelor câmpii.
A "FAUX" COWBOY AND A REAL POET
Jon Varga is a poet, artist and freelance writer from the United States. In a short self-portrait published in his personal blog “Lone Star Concerto”, he describes himself as a “passionate, unconventional, artistic, politically incorrect” subject. Originary from Southern California, Jon Varga is “presently a reluctant Texan and a faux cowboy”. But even if Jon feels himself modestly as a “reluctant Texan” and a “faux cowboy”, he definitely is a real and original poet.
                                                                              *
